What does it mean to print green?
Cary Printing is not only internationally certified (PEFC), but is also FSC and SFI certified as well. What do these certifications mean to you? How and when can you use the FSC and SFI logos? We're happy to answer all of these questions and more, so that printing green becomes second nature to you.
PEFC – The Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification, the PEFC provides an assurance mechanism to purchasers of wood and paper products that they are promoting the sustainable management of forests. PEFC has in its membership 33 independent national forest certification systems, of which 23 to date have been through a rigorous assessment process involving public consultation and the use of independent assessors to provide the assessments on which mutual recognition decisions are taken by the membership. These 23 systems account for more than 200 million hectares of certified forests producing millions of tons of certified timber to the market place, making PEFC the world's largest certification system. The other national members schemes are at various stages of development and are working towards mutual recognition under the PEFC processes.

FSC– Forest Stewardship Council, an international organization that audits companies to assure that the wood and pulp used in the production process are grown, harvested and manufactured to high environmental standards. There are 10 Principles and 57 Criteria that address legal issues, indigenous rights, labor rights, multiple benefits, and environmental impacts surrounding forest management. In order to use any FSC trademarks, including the FSC logo, initials "FSC", or phrase "Forest Stewardship Council" on a printed piece, the printer must have chain-of-custody certification. Without this certification, no claims can be printed regarding the FSC-certified content of the paper.

SFI – Sustainable Forestry Initiative certification, meeting 113 indicators that demonstrate, that Cary Printing is fully committed to the perpetual growing and harvesting of trees. Cary Printing is the 14th printer in the US to receive SFI certification. An independent audit is required for all SFI certifications. These audits are rigorous, on-the-ground assessments of an organization’s operations conducted by highly qualified and accredited auditors. Of the leading certification programs in the United States, the SFI program is the only North American forest certification program that maintains strict separation between standard setting and accreditation of certifying bodies, in accordance with international protocols.
